State Rep. Dave Agema today called for support of a U.S.
Constitutional amendment affirming rights of parents to raise
their children as they see fit, without laws overriding such
rights.
“Governments
are notorious for trying to trample on the rights of parents to
raise their children-- just look at how many foolish laws and
regulations try to keep parents from home-schooling their kids,”
said Agema, R-Grandville. “Parents--
not some law or treaty-- should have the ultimate say about the
education and upbringing of their kids.”
Agema
said that both a U.S. senator
and Congressman Peter Hoekstra have introduced resolutions to
amend the Constitution to “prevent the erosion of the enduring
American tradition of treating parental rights as fundamental
rights.” The
amendment would grant parents exclusive rights to educate and
raise their children as they see fit and forbid state, federal
and international laws or treaties from superseding these
rights.
