West Michigan area
residents who believe they are being over-assessed on their
property taxes are encouraged to attend a local workshop
sponsored by Reps. Dave Agema and Arlan Meekhof on how to appeal
their tax assessment.
“Area
homeowners are questioning their property assessments as more
and more people are noticing that their assessed value does not
line up with the current market value of their property,” said
Meekhof, of West Olive. “The appeals process can seem
confusing, so I’m encouraging residents to come learn what they
need to know and what help is available.”
Agema
encouraged all property owners to attend the meeting.
“Taxpayers
have a right to compare and question their property assessment
rate and it’s always a good idea to double-check the information
every so often, just like you would look at any receipt to make
sure the numbers add up correctly,” said Agema, of
Grandville. “If there is a discrepancy, the board of review can
make the correction and your property taxes can be decreased.”
The 7
p.m. meeting takes place Feb. 23 at the Grand Valley State
University Alumni House andVisitor Center, One Campus Drive, on
the college campus in Allendale.
