State Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville, today gave the following statement after Gov. Rick Snyder delivered a transportation message that included plans to raise revenue for road repairs in Michigan:

"I have very serious concerns with anything that will raise taxes during a recession. Increasing taxes on fuel, whether that's standard gas, diesel, or aviation fuel, will drive business elsewhere and the jobs that could be created will be dead in the water.

"Earlier this year I introduced a bill that would reallocate a portion of Michigan's sales tax revenue to fund local road programs. Redirecting money we are already bringing in means the roads get fixed while Michigan residents don't see any increased out-of-pocket expenses.

"I am carefully considering everything the governor said today and will continue to listen to residents about the merits and pitfalls of certain actions."
